Explore Belgium's colonial history through its monuments and public spaces
Whether you're a history buff, passionate about human rights, or just curious about Belgium, this tour offers a peek into the profound, and often painful, legacies of empire
The Tour
Beyond the chocolate and waffles, there’s a darker, more profound side to Belgium.
Join me as we explore Belgium's colonial history and its lasting impact on both Belgium and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This tour, in English, engages with the landmarks, monuments, and public spaces that evoke Belgium's often violent colonial past. As we walk through the city, we'll visit key sites like the Monument to Belgian Pioneers in the Congo, and Leopold II's statue, discussing the legacies of Belgian rule and the exploitation that came with it. You’ll gain insight into how these historical events continue to shape Belgium's identity, as well as the effects still felt in the DRC today.
Through this tour, we’ll not only revisit the past but also delve into present-day conversations around decolonization, reparations, and social justice.

About Me
I'm Saim. I’m a history nerd and journalist, and I love a good story. I like connecting the dots between dates and events and how they shape our lives today.
I come from Pakistan and am now a citizen of Belgium, which means I grew up in a former colony, only to move to a former colonial power. I like exploring the lasting effects these dual histories have on our identities, and how we grapple with dark and uncomfortable parts of our past.
I offer these tours for people who, like me, are curious about Brussels, its origins and how the city deals with issues of race, colonization, equity, and justice today.

“I learned so much from Saim about Belgium’s colonial history through the many traces left in Brussels. The tour was very interesting and sparked many discussions. Saim is a talented guide and storyteller. I highly recommend this tour! (I actually did it twice and learned new things).”
“Whether you’re a Brussels local or visitor, you’ll learn something new on Saim’s tour. He’s funny, engaging, and passionate about the city and its history. It felt like Saim is a walking encyclopedia — he had an in-depth answer no matter the question. I walked away with a much deeper appreciation of the cultural heritage of the city and the history that isn’t so far past.”
“Saim is a great storyteller. As a resident of Brussels, this tour took me to some familiar places and opened my eyes to things I didn’t even realize were there. If you’re a tourist, get past the chocolate shops and the Atomium, and into the story of what made Brussels – and DRC – what they are today. 100% recommended.”
“Saim walked us through a super interesting part of Belgium’s history. It's one thing to know that the country has a colonial past, another thing is to see how visible it is in the city we live, and in places we pass by every day.”
